The Cologne Cinema Nights are back and we’re excited! When else is it possible to see up to 40 movies with just one ticket (if you leave aside such trivial things as sleeping and eating)? Right, never. That’s why we’ll definitely be there when the big festival of Cologne cinemas, film initiatives, film festivals, distributors, cultural institutions and universities takes place for the 14th time.
40 films at 16 different venues over 4 days. Including classics, film premieres and indie gems from recent years. Let’s take a look.
1. the best movie of all time (Official Competition)
Seriously, do you want to miss out on the best movie of all time? No. The premise: A billionaire entrepreneur is convinced he can make – you guessed it – the best movie ever. It’s directed by a brilliant Penélope Cruz; Oscar Martinez and Antonio Banderas, who has been bouncing from triumph to triumph lately anyway, seal the deal on some wacky cinematic fun.

2nd Aşk, Mark ve Ölüm
Cem Kaya’s documentary film talks about “Love, German Mark and Death”, but also about Turkish culture in exile, 60 years of Turkish music, dreams and promises, success and xenophobia. A significant testimony to the times, which was awarded the Panorama Audience Award at this year’s Berlinale.

3rd Miss Lonely (Sabishinbô)
The Japanese cult director Ôbayashi Nobuhiko passed away two years ago. His works are unique and unrivaled in their visual language and mysteriousness (read: craziness). Anyone familiar with the mystery-horror film Hausu knows what I’m talking about. In the 80s, he created the Onomichi trilogy, set in his hometown. One of the three films is Sabishinbô, which is about Miss Lonely and her doppelganger and mixes dream and reality like a deck of cards.

4 The Good Boss (El buen patrón)
If Robert DeNiro plays an intern, then Javier Bardem is the boss. In Fernando León de Aranoa’s comedy, the Oscar-winner plays a slick patron of a factory who is determined to win the local business award. But something always gets in the way.

5 Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
Leo is a sex therapist hired by ex-teacher Nancy Stokes, who has never had a satisfying sex life in 55 years. A brilliant Emma Thompson and Katy Brand’s fiery script make this entry a no-brainer.

8th 20th CenturyWomen/Beginners
You can’t go wrong with Mike Mills when it comes to indie cinema. So whether you’re watching Anette Benning trying to raise her son in 20th Century Women and getting help from Elle Fanning, or paying tribute to the great Christopher Plummer in Beginners, great cinema is on offer both times. Just make it a double feature!
