Fancy a little movie marathon on these dark and cold autumn days? Or are you simply horror fans who are always on the lookout for new content? We’ve made an effort and combed through the big three streaming sites (Netflix, Prime, Disney+) and compiled the most interesting films and series for you. As a little treat for the particularly big movie fans among you, there are also some rare horror films on MUBI. 🔪
Netflix
Admittedly, Netflix – apart from its own productions – doesn’t have the greatest concentration of really good horror films. But if you take a closer look, you can find some gruesome (=good) content
1. hush
With Kate Siegel as Maddie Young, Mike Flanagan’s slasher has a scream queen of a different kind, because Maddie is deaf and dumb. Which of course only makes the movie even more exciting.
2. annihilation
In this thriller/horror from Alex Garland, Natalie Portman & Co. are on the road in The Shimmer, a mysterious quarantine zone infested with mutated plants and animals. A visual highlight and a gripping chamber play.
3 Red Dragon
Although the second film adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel is not quite as good as the first (Manhunter), it is brilliantly cast with Edward Norton, Athony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
4 He Never Died
The Canadian/American co-production He Never Died is not only a horror film, but also a comedy. The immortal cannibal Jack, played by singer Henry Rollins, takes center stage.
5 Don’t Breathe
Three thieves break into the house of an old, blind veteran in order to steal his fortune. But they soon realize that the man is not so helpless and that they themselves are now the victims.
6 Fear Street
Based on the successful books by R.L. Stine, the Fear Street trilogy follows a group of teenagers in the small town of Shadyside who are on the trail of a curse. The series carries tones of the slasher genre and brings together some familiar faces (Maya Hawke, Sadie Sink) with new acting talent.
7 The Midnight Club
The new horror series follows a group of terminally ill teenagers at Brightcliffe Hospice who make a pact. The first person to die among them is to send signs from the afterlife to communicate what it’s like there.
8th Cam
The horror movie for the Only Fans generation. A camgirl must fret over a doppelganger until she realizes she’s not just trying to take over her channel – but her life.
Prime
Whatever you think of Amazon, the fact is that Prime has a lot of really good films and series to offer.
9th It
Both parts of the successful remake of Stephen King’s classic novel are currently available on Prime. Need we say much more?
10. Insidious
We love Patrick Wilson. Here he plays the father of a boy who falls into a coma and becomes a tool of higher powers. This is just one of James Wan’s movies that are currently very easy to stream.
11 The Exorcist
You might think that the genre of exorcism films is one of the weakest of the horror genres. That might even be true if you don’t count the godfather of the genre, which is also very creepy in 2022.
12 The Invisible Man
In this reimagining of H.G.Wells’ material, Cee (Elisabeth Moss), battles her ex who terrorizes her as an invisible man. An incredible tour de force from the actress and an interesting way of adapting the material for the 21st century.
13 The Shining
All work no play makes Jack a dull boy. What more can be said about this classic that hasn’t already been said? It’s not included in the basic Prime tariff, but you’ll gladly pay the €3.98 to watch Jack Nicholson break through the toilet door.
14 The Babadook
Ba-ba-dook. Ba-Ba-Dook. BA-BA-DOOK.
15. the Blade trilogy
Soon there will be a separate entry on Blade in the MCU. Until then, there’s still plenty of time to binge the original trilogy from the 90s starring Wesley Snipes.
16th Halloween
A classic of the genre that continues to inspire countless remakes 42 years after its release. But none of them can match John Carpenter’s original.
17 The Nun
Another entry in the Conjuring universe: discover the secret of the demonic nun and experience a cinematic atmosphere that is second to none.
18 The Silence of the Lambs
If we’ve already mentioned Red Dragon, then we can’t leave out The Silence of the Lambs. One of the few films to win the Big Five: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Screenplay.
19th Mandy
Mandy has captivated critics with its style and originality. Nicholas Cage plays a lumberjack whose wife is kidnapped by a sect of demonic bikers on LSD. Right.
20. X
When porn turns into pure horror: X is one of the best recent scary movies. It was directed by Ti West, who released a prequel to X in the same year.
Disney +
Disney+ is not just a platform for Marvel films and comics. Some of the biggest horror films out there can currently be seen there.
21 The Sixth Sense
I see dead people: This is perhaps M. Night Shyamalan’s best film. Bruce Willis as a child psychologist and Haley Joel Osment as a fearful patient. Oh, who cares that it’s not really a horror movie.
22 The Hills Have Eyes
Alexandre Aja’s remake of Wes Craven’s film is a success story when it comes to remakes of horror classics. The eyes of the hills belong to the cannibals who target a family whose car breaks down in the middle of the desert.
23. 28 Days Later
I’m not a fan of zombie apocalypses. Danny Boyle’s movie, along with Planet Terror, is one of the few entries in the zombie movie meme. A deadly virus kills almost the entire population of the world and the rest must flock together to survive.
24th Alien
Alien. A movie you could watch again and again. A movie that only shows the titular monster at the very end, after two hours of atmospheric work.
25th Black Swan
The opera among horror films, the horror among arthouse films: Black Swan is for those of you who aren’t such die-hard horror lovers but like a good scare (and Natalie Portman).
26 The Fly
No list is complete without David Cronenberg, the Canadian master of body horror, and no other movie by Cronenberg is as disgusting as The Fly. Man becomes fly, with everything that entails. With Jeff Goldblum <3
27th Pan’s Labyrinth
Another movie that is more in the fantasy vein is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which is set during the Second World War and thus offers an escape from the horror of real life.
MUBI
If you don’t know MUBI yet and like rare and unusual films and arthouse classics, you should give the platform a chance.
28th Vampire
Pere Portabella is an icon in Spain and his experimental film Vampire (Cuadecuc, Vampir) is one of his best-known works. With Christopher Lee.
29 Empire of Passion
A married woman and her lover kill her husband and throw him down a well. But the story doesn’t end there, because the man’s ghost haunts them both.
30th Night of the Living Dead
Is this the best zombie movie ever made? There’s only one way to find out.
31 The Housemaid
Long before The Parasite made Korean cinema world-famous again, there was this strange story by Kim Ki-Young. Social criticism, sex and horror make for a unique mix.
32nd Near Dark
Before Kathryn Bigelow became world-famous with The Hurt Locker, she shook up the vampire western genre with Near Dark. Rest in peace Bill Paxton.
Bonus: YouTube
Hey, you can also find a whole movie on YouTube every now and then.
33rd The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
With just two clicks, you can watch the very first Chainsaw Massacre (1974) on YouTube for free. Tobe Hooper’s film divided audiences worldwide – and has never been equaled.
