Congratulations: Today is International Golden Hop Day. Every first Friday in August has been Beer Day since 2008. The tradition originated in California and has now spread to 200 cities worldwide. International Beer Day has three aims:
- To enjoy beer together with friends.
- To honor the men and women who brew and serve beer.
- To celebrate the beers of all nations and cultures
Even though Germany and Cologne have plenty of holidays in honor of beer apart from this international holiday – German Beer Day, Cologne Beer Festival and many more. – it wouldn’t hurt to have another one. At least it gives you another reason to reach for an after-work Kölsch. Or another beer that you prefer.
1. go on the hunt for craft beer
It doesn’t always have to be lager or Kölsch. Craft beer is becoming more and more popular – head to the Bierlager in Südstadt (12-23) to try it out until late in the evening. Or pick up some beers to go at Bier macht schön in Sülz. The range of 200 craft beer varieties speaks for itself. You can buy individual beers or put together your own personal six-pack in honor of the day. The beer museum in Antwerpener Straße is also a good choice – a kiosk with a museum-like feel.
2. celebrate your favorite Kölsch variety
Not all Kölsch is the same. In addition to 111 years of Früh Kölsch tradition, there are countless other varieties. Head to Päffgen Brauhaus, where you can treat yourself to a pork knuckle or bratwurst alongside the liquid gold, or to Gaffel am Dom, where beer is on tap seven days a week. At Brauhaus Sion, you can take part in centuries of Kölsch culture (since 1318!) and the Schreckenskammer produces Cologne’s national non-carbonated drink.
3. simply relax by the Rhine
The sun should come out again in the evening. The best opportunity to relax in your favorite spot with a beer and a view of the Rhine. It’s up to you whether you start the evening on the Rhine promenade or on the Rodenkirchen Riviera. Cheers!
