Today is St. Martin’s Day. A day that is accompanied by many beautiful customs. Perhaps you remember some of them from your childhood or still practice them today. We present to you the most common St. Martin’s traditions and hope to inspire you a little.
1st lantern procession
Admittedly, this custom is mainly for children. Nevertheless, the special atmosphere during the procession is incomparable for everyone. The beautiful lanterns and torches, the St. Martin’s songs and the St. Martin’s fire at the end of the procession create an incredibly cozy atmosphere. At St. Martin’s bonfire, the legend of the sharing of the cloak is usually re-enacted, according to which St. Martin shares his cloak with a sword and hands it to a poor beggar.
2nd Martin’s goose
The legendary St. Martin’s goose meal is a special highlight on this day. It is often served with dumplings and red cabbage. Legend has it that Martin was to be appointed bishop, but did not want to take up the office and hid in a goose pen. However, the geese betrayed him with their cackling and so he was finally consecrated Bishop of Tours.
3rd St. Martin’s carol singing
At the legendary St. Martin’s Carol Singing, children go from door to door and present their beautiful lanterns. They sing traditional St. Martin’s songs. In return, they are given sweets, cookies or fruit. The tradition goes back to the custom of children of farmers going around the houses and singing before the start of winter to replenish their winter supplies.
4th Martin’s cookies
Delicious pastries to accompany St. Martin’s Day are a must. In many regions of Germany, Weckmänner or Stutenkerle are baked. The little man made of yeast dough is available with or without raisins and is decorated with a clay pipe. The figure represents St. Martin.
We hope you will be inspired by these traditional customs!
